Who is Kim Bujang in ‘Agent Kim Reactivated’?

For years, Kim Bujang (played by So Ji Sub) lived in complete obscurity. To his neighbors, he was simply a quiet bank manager, a single father solely dedicated to raising his daughter, Kim Min Ji (Seo Su Min). No one could have ever suspected that behind that ordinary and reassuring appearance was Agent Kim, one of the most lethal, dangerous, and classified intelligence assets in the entire history of South Korea.

In the murky world of international espionage, the figure of Agent Kim borders on myth. Known by the codename 66, the man is a former North Korean elite agent who, after defecting, was secretly recruited by Seoul. His file is locked behind impenetrable security levels: almost no one within the government agencies is aware of its existence, especially because any potential leak could trigger an unprecedented diplomatic crisis between the two Koreas.

But why does the mere mention of his name terrify the entire Asian espionage network? To understand it, just take a look at his monstrous resume.

    The Ghost of Intelligence

Before becoming the reassuring Kim Bujang, his calling card was code 66. Due to his extraordinary lethal skills, the South Korean secret services preferred to keep him completely off the official radar, making his profile accessible only to a very select circle of high-ranking officials.

The operational details of his career seem to have come straight out of an action blockbuster: He has operated five times as a double agent and has successfully infiltrated North Korea 17 times. As if that weren’t enough, he led the plot to assassinate the supreme commander of Pyongyang’s military forces, landing him right at the top of the regime’s wanted list. At the height of his activity, the information he possessed was considered so sensitive that even Russia and China had deployed special teams with the sole objective of eliminating him.

From war machine to family man

Despite such a bloody and blood-soaked past, Kim managed to achieve the unthinkable: turn the page. For over twelve years, he literally buried his old identity, focusing all his energy on trying to give Min Ji a normal life.

Getting out of the loop, however, came at a very high price. Driven by the visceral desire to be a present father for his daughter, the man did not hesitate to threaten the supreme head of South Korean intelligence with death in order to obtain leave. Faced with such an ultimatum, the agency preferred to back down, allowing him to disappear into thin air and blend in with the common people.

The forced return to the front line

The precarious balance of his new life is abruptly shattered when Pyongyang discovers that the super agent is hiding right in Seoul, under everyone’s nose. North Korea orders his immediate capture and execution for high treason; meanwhile, the South Korean intelligence services enter a state of total panic, trying to track him down before their rivals to prevent the darkest state secrets from falling into enemy hands.

With the grip of the two countries tightening around him, the drama unfolds: Min Ji is kidnaped. It’s the last straw. With no other choice and with his back against the wall, Kim is forced to dust off that murderous rage he had tried to forget for a decade. To save his daughter, Agent Kim must return to being the monster he once was, initiating a brutal and high-tension manhunt in Agent Kim Reactivated.
